EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Women make up about half of the total world population. The important role of women contributing to nation building, economic growth and social living has recorded significant gains. Empowering Women through entrepreneurship for their holistic development is one of the major projects of Global Appreciation and Skills Training Network (GASTRAN). Through GASTRAN entrepreneurship initiative, many women creatively and innovatively continue to respond to the dire challenges of their environment in ways that help alleviate poverty in the various under-resourced communities they find themselves.


PROJECT & IMPACT CASE STUDY | WOMEN INTO DETERGENTS & SOAP MAKING IN AWUTU BREKU, GHANA, WEST AFRICA


By focusing on its social mission and responsibilities along with providing help to prevent over-dependence of women on their families in communities that remain underserved, GASTRAN seeks to equip women with relevant skills to be self-sustainable to support their families. GASTRAN encourages the use of improved and environmentally friendly indigenous technology and locally acquired raw materials for the production of detergents, shampoo and household soap is specially suitable for laundry, damaged and greasy hair and bathing. In realizing an all-inclusive women empowerment training, GASTRAN relied on Information and Communication Technologies Channels including Oman FM, Net2 TV, and collaborated with the Awutu Bereku Traditional Council, and Awutu Bereku Community in organizing skills development training for hundred and twenty (120) women in making toilet soap, liquid soap, soap powder, shower gel and detergent.


PROJECT & IMPACT CASE STUDY | WOMEN INTO BATIK AND TIE-DYE TRAINING, ASAMANKESE, CENTRAL REGION, GHANA, WEST AFRICA
Indigenous textile embellishment, uniquely combining ingenuity with various hand crafted technique to dyed and fabric decoration. Batik and Tie-dyeing production are low-cost and patronized by a growing number of people. GASTRAN colourfuly put a smile on the women of Asamankese Zongo Community in a two-day skill development training program in Batik, Tie & Dye. The women were taking through various decorative technique in fabric dyeing method, patterns and designs. The training aimed to create jobs and increase the generation of income as to catalyze equitable sustainable development by investing in underserved communities.


PROJECT & IMPACT CASE STUDY | SINGLE PARENTS INTO GARI PROCESSING & PRODUCTION, BAWJIASE, CENTRAL REGION OF GHANA, WEST AFRICA.
Gari, a coarse food product from cassava is mainly a delicacy in West African countries. In recent times, gari, popular for its varied use and handiness is gaining momentum in both production and export to other countries. At present, GASTRAN is essentially involved in training, promoting and providing locally made equipment to support gari processing and production to increase food security and serve as alternative sources of income for single parents and women in poor communities. In order to enrich the quality of gari production, GASTRAN in joint efforts with local gari producers introduced a recipe of roasting the grated, de-watering mash, wet cake cassava with soya bean power into gelatinized particles, giving gari a foreign but rich taste and colour.
